The core focus of the network’s joint development activities is the application of plasma technology. Plasmas are ionised gases, whose inactivating effects have been proven on a large number of microorganisms in several independent studies. Plasmas can also be used to produce special surface characteristics.

The network Surface4Food will also look into other alternative technologies apart from plasma in order to be able to address various problem areas of production plants. These focus for example on fluorinating processes or the development of customised sol-gel processes and flame pre-treatment.
